Compulsory LEvels
Junior Olympic PRogram
Levels 1-5
The Junior Olympic program was developed with the belief that all athletes, regardless of their potential, must have a solid foundation of basic skills in order to advance safely.
The program allows the gymnast to advance at their own pace. Proficiency in minimum skill and mobility scores qualify the gymnast to progress through the levels. Competitive opportunities include USA Gymnastics state championships.
Compulsory gymnastic levels 3-5 consist of progressively difficult skills performed competitively as standardized routines.
Levels 1-3 are used as an achievement-oriented program within Zenith West’s introductory pre-team program. All beginning gymnasts enter the program at level one and may advance through more than one level per year.
Routines for levels 6-10 are original, and composed to showcase the athlete’s strengths.
In optional gymnastics, routines are built around organizational guidelines. Levels 6-8 have difficulty restrictions, in that a gymnast competing at one of these levels may not attempt skills above a certain level of difficulty.
Composition is evaluated at levels 8-10.
In addition to demonstrating the necessary skills, gymnasts must reach a minimum age to advance to the next level. For example, level 8 and 9 gymnasts must be at least 8 years old; level 10 gymnasts must be at least 9 years old.
Competitions for gymnasts at level 7 culminate in State Championships, level 8 at Regional Championships, level 9 at Eastern or Western Championships, and level 10 at Junior Olympic National Championships.
